Another busy week here at Daniel Smoker Property Maintenance, travelling across Epsom and the surrounding Surrey areas helping homeowners protect and improve their properties.

One of the things we enjoy most about this job is that every week brings something different. Some jobs involve major repair work, while others come down to spotting the small details that can save a homeowner thousands in future damage.

This week was a mix of both.

At Daniel Smoker Property Maintenance, we provide reliable property maintenance in Surrey, helping homeowners keep their properties safe, secure, and well maintained all year round.

Gutter Cleaning on a 1930s Semi-Detached Home in Ewell

We started the week in Ewell carrying out gutter cleaning on a beautiful 1930s semi-detached property.

Older homes have plenty of character, but they also require regular maintenance to keep them performing properly year-round. Gutters are one of the most overlooked parts of a property, yet they play a huge role in protecting your home from damp and water damage.

Over time, gutters collect:

  • Moss

  • Leaves

  • Dirt and debris

  • Roof sediment

When blocked, rainwater can overflow down walls and around foundations, often leading to:

  • Damp patches

  • Mould growth

  • Damaged brickwork

  • Rotting fascia boards

After thoroughly clearing the gutters and checking the flow, the system was back working exactly as it should.

Homeowner tip: If your gutters overflow during rain or you notice plant growth coming from them, it’s time to get them cleaned before bigger problems start.

Flat Roof Replacement & Structural Repairs in Stoneleigh

Next, we were over in Stoneleigh carrying out a much larger roofing project.

The flat roof had reached the point where a full strip-off and renewal was needed. Once we removed the old roof covering, we discovered a hidden issue that could have caused serious problems over time.

The ends of the rafters hadn’t originally been fixed correctly.

This meant the roof structure wasn’t as secure as it should have been, so before installing the new roof system, we:

  • Added new structural fixings right through the timber into the wall plate

  • Strengthened and secured the affected areas

  • Reboarded the entire roof

  • Installed fresh felt to create a fully weatherproof finish

This is exactly why proper investigation matters in roofing work. Sometimes the real problem sits underneath the surface where it can’t be seen immediately.

Cutting corners on roofing almost always leads to bigger costs later on.

By fixing the structure properly now, the homeowner has peace of mind knowing the roof is secure, watertight, and built to last.

Did you know? Flat roofs often fail not because of the waterproof layer itself, but because movement in the structure underneath eventually creates weak points and water ingress.

Investigating a Bathroom Leak That Turned Out to Be a Simple Fix

One of the most interesting jobs this week involved investigating a bathroom leak that had been frustrating the homeowner for quite some time.

The client had noticed recurring signs of water damage around the bathroom, but the source wasn’t immediately obvious.

These kinds of leaks can sometimes become expensive very quickly if they’re not identified properly. Water has a way of travelling silently behind tiles, flooring and walls before visible damage appears.

After carefully inspecting the shower area, we found the issue — and it’s actually something we come across surprisingly often.

The shower screen had been installed before the mastic sealant had been properly applied.

This left a tiny gap between the shower screen and the tiles, allowing small amounts of water to escape every time the shower was used.

It may sound minor, but over weeks and months, even a tiny gap can cause:

  • Damaged plasterboard

  • Swollen flooring

  • Damp smells

  • Mould growth

  • Expensive hidden damage

Thankfully, in this case the solution was straightforward:

  • Remove the failed section

  • Properly seal the area

  • Ensure the shower screen was watertight

Simple problem. Simple fix. Big relief for the homeowner.

Important lesson: If you notice recurring moisture or staining around a shower or bath, don’t ignore it. Catching leaks early can save a huge amount of money later.

Why Small Maintenance Jobs Matter

One thing this week really highlighted is how important preventative maintenance can be.

A blocked gutter, a loose roof structure, or a tiny unsealed gap might not seem urgent at first — but left alone, they can quickly become major repair bills.

At Daniel Smoker Property Maintenance, we believe in doing things properly the first time and helping homeowners stay ahead of problems before they escalate.

Whether it’s roofing, repairs, maintenance, or investigations, we always aim to provide honest advice, quality workmanship, and reliable service across:
